Literacy
Literacy includes reading, writing, oral communication, and understanding different media (posters, brochures, advertisements, etc.) Each student spends 15-20 minutes writing in their daily journal. This helps students practice their spelling and grammar and different writing conventions (including recall, sequence, and cause and effect). Students also do a "Daily Language Review" to help them learn and practice important rules of punctuation and spelling. Students read out loud to their teacher to ensure proper pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. We follow a leveled reading system and set individual targets throughout the year to ensure students keep making excellent progress in reading.
French
We have daily lessons in French. We begin each class by singing "La Classe Commence en Francais," greeting each other, and discussing the date, weather, and time. Then, we begin our lessons following the AIM program. This program encourages students to learn actions for each new vocabulary word. At the end of the year we will perform a drama called "Le Petit Chat Cherche un Famille."
Chinese
In Chinese class our students learn and practice new vocabulary, poetry, and songs. Students learn to write neat characters and read a variety of simple texts. Each student has their own workbook that they bring home to practice.
Math
Different strands of Math are covered, including: Number Sense & Numeration, Patterning & Algebra, Geometry & Spatial Sense, Measurement, and Data Management & Probability. Within each strand there are multiple concepts that need to be learned and practiced by our students. We use hands-on materials to ensure students are able to make real-life connections to their work. Students also learn their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.
Science & Social Studies
Our Beethoven B students love to learn about the world around them through our Science & Social Studies units. Some of these units include: Community Features, Animals, Air and Water, Liquids and Solids, Forces of Nature, and Soil. Students are given projects to do throughout the year that encourage them to think more in depth about these concepts and help prepare them for future real-life experiences outside school.
Piano
The Beethoven B students spend between 45 minutes - 1 hour each day practicing at school. Our piano teachers guide them through their lessons and listen to their progress.
Music
Our students love singing together! All of our Beethoven students sing together as one large choir under the guidance of Ms. Vera and Ms. Audrey. Throughout the year we hold special concerts so our students' families can hear them perform. Our students also learn Music Theory.
Fine Arts
Practice makes perfect! Our students practice sketching in the sketchbooks for a few minutes everyday. They learn concepts like Line, Shape, Colour, Pattern, and Texture. They techniques help students create larger, beautiful pieces of artwork.
Dance
Our Dance program combines ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance styles. Not only is it fun, but dancing also helps improve students’ posture, balance, and coordination.
Drama
Our students are learning the actions for the vocabulary of our French drama "Le Petit Chat Cherche un Famille".
