Literacy
Our Literacy program consists of several elements, including reading, writing, and oral communication. Our reading program is extensive as we practice elements of ‘Daily Five’ whereby students "read to self," "read to others," and/or perform word work. We have a Borrow-A-Book program where students have an opportunity to borrow leveled books from our classroom library. This can be done daily or on a minimum basis of 3 times a week. Students also write in a journal on a daily basis. Writing helps kids develop critical thinking skills - it helps them understand and communicate ideas. Students are assessed regularly through one-on-one student/teacher interaction, oral assessment, and language folder assessment.
French
A French lesson is done every day. Students are taught colours, animals, shapes and French songs. We are use the AIM program and students engage in French songs and skits. The French skit we are currently learning is "La Poule Maboule."
Math
Our math program follows the Ontario Curriculum standards and expectations. Throughout the year students learn about Sorting and Patterning, Addition and Subtraction, Number Relationships, 2D and 3D elements, Time, Data Management and other mathematical elements. Our Math curriculum is Grade One focused with modification to accommodate the younger students.
Physical Education
The Health and Physical Education curriculum promotes important educational values and goals that support the development of character. We encourage students to achieve their personal best, through equity and fair play, good health, and general well-being.
Chinese
In Chinese class our students learn and practice new vocabulary, poetry, and songs. Students learn to write neat characters and read a variety of simple texts. Each student has their own workbook that they bring home to practice.
Science and Social Science
Students of Beethoven A are curious, inquisitive students’ who are excited to learn about the world around them! Most recently we studied grasshoppers and learned about their lifecycle, habitats and food source. For over a week we monitored a grasshopper in our classroom and document any changes. Currently we are studying Communities and why communities, and those who live in those communities are important.
Piano
The Beethoven A students spend between 45 minutes - 1 hour each day practicing at school. Our piano teachers guide them through their lessons and listen to their progress.
Music
Our students love singing together! All of our Beethoven students sing together as one large choir under the guidance of Ms. Vera and Ms. Audrey. Throughout the year we hold special concerts so our students' families can hear them perform. Our students also learn Music Theory.
Fine Arts
Practice makes perfect! Our students practice sketching in the sketchbooks for a few minutes everyday. They learn concepts like Line, Shape, Colour, Pattern, and Texture. They techniques help students create larger, beautiful pieces of artwork.
Dance
Our Dance program combines ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance styles. Not only is it fun, but dancing also helps improve students’ posture, balance, and coordination.
Drama
Our students are learning the actions for the vocabulary of our French drama "La Poule Maboule."
